Helping Bromwell's Fourth Graders learn about other countries and cultures
Fridays, 12:15 - 1:00

The Fourth Grade Forum helps our students learn about different cultures and other nations. These are presentations put on by you, our Bromwell families! Your presentation may be a place that you only visited, or it may be a place where you lived for several years. You may wish to discuss a culture that you have studied, or a culture you have only heard about from your own older relatives
Typically, parents or grandparents make these presentations, but not exclusively. Family friends have sometimes been our presenters, and sometimes professional or academic associates.
Previous forums included presentations on Australia, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Equador, France, Germany, and Hungary – and to Sweden, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, and Wales. Continuing alphabetically past W is a bit hard, but we can do it! We've discussed Xizang (or at least Tibet, where this village is located), Yemen, and New Zealand. Phew! We have also had presentations about Native American tribes here in North America, and even about the scientific community in Antarctica.
Interested? We hope so!
You are encouraged to discuss any or all of these topics:
  • Geography - including important places, environmental issues, climate
  • History, politics, culture - including religion, ethnic groups, sports, clothing, food, daily life
  • Literature and the arts
  • Personal or family experiences
  • Anything else you think important or worthwhile!

You can present your information by using various media:
  • Videos
  • Slides
  • Power-point programs
  • Maps
  • Photo albums
  • Artwork

You can bring along artifacts:
  • Family heirlooms
  • Toys
  • Books
  • Clothing
  • Household objects

Can you bring helpers? Yes! A grandparent or older relative can add a rich dimension to your presentation, and we would love to have them join us. Your very own fourth grader, of course, can act as your assistant and aide.
Can you bring food? No, please do not bring food. Due to increased worries about allergies and other issues, we ask that interesting native foods be described... but not distributed.

Examples and Resources

Parents, if you're not sure how to go about planning your presentation, here are two examples for you. They are two PPT presentations that accompanied previous Fourth Grade Forums. They've been converted to PDF files for your viewing pleasure! Check 'em out and you'll have a good idea of what we're looking for.

As you can see from the examples above, we want to make sure that these presentations are academic, not just "vacation pictures." A Fourth Grade Forum is first and foremost a social studies lesson.

Regarding technical resources, we have an Mac G5 connected to our Promethean Board. If you have an Apple computer, that's easiest for us to use. But the Promethean Board has Windows capabilities, too, so we are usually able to present a program with either format. To make doubly sure, we suggest that you also put your slideshow or powerpoint on a flash drive. It also helps to e-mail programs in advance. If you have selected videos you'd like to show (such as those found on YouTube or Daily Motion), e-mail those url's in advance, too.

We've scheduled the Fourth Grade forum to start right after lunch recess at 12:15. You should arrive 10 - 15 minutes early for set-up.
