I'm very happy to welcome my new grade-level partner, Carrie Maierhofer, to Bromwell – and to the fourth grade. Fourth grade has always been known for stable and consistent teamwork, and Ms. Maierhofer and I hope to carry on that tradition.

We work closely, occasionally co-teaching some subjects or lessons. We hold regular "community meetings" with both fourth grade classes together to talk about common issues and concerns. We also look forward to team-teaching with other Bromwell instructors and paraprofessionals. In the past, the fourth grade team has worked closely with the Challenge teacher and the Technology teacher, and we've joined with the Art and Music teachers to create some very grand (but very entertaining) productions. We look forward to similar projects this year.
A notable feature of our schedule is that we platoon. This is also sometimes described as rotating classes. I teach literacy (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar) to one group while Ms. Maierhofer teaches math, science, and social studies. Then we switch!

Here's how rotation works. I see my homeroom group in the morning for literacy (and such) while Ms. Maierhofer sees her group for math (and etcetera). We switch groups or rotate just before lunch recess, teach those same lessons to the other group, and then switch back for Specials and the end of the school day.
This system is in place in other Bromwell classrooms, and in many DPS schools, too. Most of our families are familiar and comfortable with platooning. As much as possible, we try to balance the timing so that students have an equal amount of time in both classrooms.
Our collaborative experiences – as well as our grade-level field trips – are meant to create and sustain a strong group identity. It is meant to help the teachers know all our students, and to help the entire fourth grade become a cohesive, supportive group. In this way, students are more prepared to take on the unique challenges we present to them, and it helps ready them for middle-school, too.

The afternoon specials rotate between art, music, physical education, and technology classes. My homeroom also attends additional classes or activities every morning except Monday. We go to an "extra" physical education session on Tuesday mornings (8:30 - 9:00). We have STEM Lab on Wednesday mornings (8:40 - 9:30), and we have library on Thursdays (9:00 - 9:30). Finally, we have Book Buddies with Ms. Duran's second grade on Friday mornings (8:45-9:15). We really do have so many fun and exciting educational experiences here at Bromwell.
